Not realised (2006)

In 2006 a new young director was appointed to the Alfa Theatre and decided to transform the concept of the theatre which until that time had been a children’s puppet stage. In this context he announced a close competition for a new visual style and an opening campaign promoting the theatre’s new face, in which he addressed young graphic designers. He wanted to replace the old logo, a figure of Faustus, with a new one, but it as a natural and logical continuum.

We based our concept on the idea that Faustus was an alchemist and we changed substances. Theatre is indeed a place of playfulness, creative work and imagination.

We attempted to conceive the new visual style so that it would address and attract both children and adult audience. It is therefore playful and at the same time elegant, simple in form and rich in possibilities it offers. The system that we designed enables the new style to be creative, interesting and varied at all times and it will not become trite, while at first glance it would obviously refer to the Alfa Theatre.

At the end, the committee did not choose any of the designs submitted by the addressed graphic designers. Instead one of the committee members, scenographer Ivan Nesveda, was entrusted with the design of the new visual style without a selection procedure. What a pity! Pilsen could have finally been proud of a scene which would present its high quality services for Pilsen citizens by means of professional and adequate design.
