Mummy, why does it smell so bad in Ústí? is an authorial cartoon. A subtle, surreal story develops in almost twenty five pages of a thin book, elucidating the origin of the terrible stench which has been tormenting the inhabitants of a northern Bohemian city, Ústí nad Labem, for years. The story consists of graphic and textual quotations of contemporary publications, films and media.

The cartoon is published in a library edition in autumn 2005 and an exhibition is held on the occasion of the celebration of its launching at the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně. This exhibition subsequently provokes a wave of media humbug, the university representatives demand its deinsallation, mayor Gandalovič reacts in the local television and regional media: “Ústí does not stink!“ During the short affair, several theories spring up about the real reason why the cartoon “Mummy, why does it smell so bad in Ústí?“ was created. One of the theories claims a conspiracy of the local ČSSD (Czech Social Democratic Party) against ODS (Civil Democratic Party) (lord mayor Gandalovič and deputy Jelínek) before the upcoming elections, another one considers the cartoon as an attack on the food and chemicals producing company Setuza and related non-transparent property relations.

This media epilogue was a good ending of the story since all cartoons end with the words: ….to be continued.
